Diamondbacks sign OF Adam Jones

The Arizona Diamondbacks have added some depth to their offense by signing veteran outfielder Adam Jones to a one year deal. Jones, who turns 34 in August, hit 15 homers with 81 RBI, 7 stolen bases with a .281 average last season in 580 at-bats with the Baltimore Orioles. Last year was the first time he hadn’t hit 25+ homers since 2010 and a change of scenery could help awaken his bat.

Defensively he is pretty underwhelming as he’s been on the decline slowly year by year, which makes this seem like GM Mike Hazen believes his bat will add much needed power on a team that has some question marks offensively and offset his recent defensive struggles. He is a former All-Star, Gold Glove winner and adds a nice veteran presence to the locker room, but it will be interesting to see what he has left in the tank.

This move won’t take AB’s away from Ketel Marte (though he was transitioning to CF) more so than it will Wilmer Flores who figures to shift into a utility IF role. They could also use Jones as a DH during interleague play throughout the season.

Projected lineup:

  1. Ketel Marte- 2B
  2. Eduardo Escobar- 3B
  3. David Peralta- LF
  4. Steven Souza- RF
  5. Adam Jones- CF
  6. Jake Lamb- 1B
  7. Nick Ahmed- SS
  8. Carson Kelly-C

For just $3 million guaranteed on a one year, this seems like a nice roll of the dice to me by Mike Hazen.
